8 Tips for a Crochet Beginner

8 Tips for a Crochet Beginner

If i could write a text to myself as beginner crocheter this would be what i would tell myself:

  1. One tip is to start with thick yarn so it is easier in the beginning, so you get that satisfactory feeling of being done with the project earlier. Thick yarn makes gorgeous hats, gloves, sweaters, blankets and much more. I started of with a headband! Scrunchies is also a very good beginner project. Of the summer tops Anna Algarve top is otherwise a perfect fast beginner friendly summer top.

  2. Here are some thicker yarns that i like.
Drops alaska, Drops air, GGH Husky box, Drops Nepal
  3. Check patterns on youtube so you can see how they are doing and not just read a pattern. (youtube was my only crochet teacher!)
  4. When you have practice a bit find some pattern online on youtube on something that you want to have, for me it was a crocheted sweater, a easy summer top like Anna Algarve top or Hanna Algarve top would had been better though. The sweater was a large project for a beginner but because i wanted that sweater i learned fast and wanted to continue with this fun crochet project! I also did some changes from the pattern of lana. You dont need to start with granny squares.

  5. Use smaller hook than the yarn recommend to make your pattern less “hollowing”, it looks nicer! This hookset has been the one that i used the most in the beginning and still using alot :D. Even though im going for the beautiful and thicker hook handles in Furls and Ophire. There are so many things to get, like yarn bowls, markers, needles, yarns and hooks, but you only need one hook and a ball of yarn.

  6. It is possible to bake in yarn ends in the next stitches — I know mindblow :O haha, so you dont have as many to weave in later, though it is good to leave a bit of the yarn to secure with witht the hook or yarn needle afterwards in back and forth and cirles to really secure the ends.
  7. When you have find you favorite yarn, keep some of it at home in a neutral color so you can just start your creativity when it hits in. Or if you need to make a gift. I use to always have some cotton yarn in off-white color at home, then i can just start with whatevers in my mind or if i see a pattern i just need to try.
    Here is some cotton yarns
A thicker one is Drops Paris, a bit thinner but still not too thin for beginner is this one Drops Muskat.

  8. Keep your unfinished yarn project in bags with a note in about what hook size, where to find the pattern and yarn label information. You will forget otherwise. I like to use cotton Tote bags (but you can store in old plastic bags too) because then it is i nice bag to take with me and also the hook want fall out or make wholes in the bag. One reason that a project is left unfinished could be that the yarn is out of stock or you got multiple other crochet ideas that you just have to try immediatelyor something came up in life.
  9. Sunbath, listen to audiobooks, watch documentaries, listen to music, podcasts, talk on phone, travel, while crocheting. It is wonderful, and creates memories. It also spreads creativity while bringing hook and yarn over to friends.

And one more — make it looser not harder, that is a beginner mistake to use to much strenght on the yarn.

Thank you, hope you get time for your knew crocheting hobby.
